The brilliantly crafted movie of Inception displays various aspects of transcendentalism and romanticism. The main character of the movie is a man named Cob who is incredibly interested in understanding people thoughts through their dreams. He is the most transcendental because his motivation ultimately derives from emotion. Cob was separated from his children after being accused of killing his wife. His impulsive and extreme actions of deceiving a wealthy businessman are discredited by his friends who do not believe he will succeed. However, he is determined to because he is driven by the emotion of love for his children and his desire of getting them back. He does whatever it takes to be with them again – despite the risk.
Another character that exhibits
both transcendentalism and romantics is Mr. Siato. He hires Cob’s team to use the power of
dreams to destroy a wealthy businessman’s company in exchange for Cob’s freedom
to come back to America and be with his children. Mr. Saito is incredibly egotistical and
expresses only interest in his only self gain.
Ariadne is the character in Inception that displays the most
romantic elements because she is able to express herself and create whatever
she wants. She begins the movie as a new
member of the team that is introduced to the unbelievable nature of the
dreaming world. She is able to manipulate the dreams in her own way and express
her own desires and thoughts through the dreams. Through this experience she learns of Cob’s
past and secrets regarding his family and previous experience with being
trapped into a dream. She therefore
helps him and in the process realizes her passion for freedom and
individuality. Once she understands the
laws that can be challenged in the dream world, she attempts to push the limits
and freely allows her imagination to wander.
The movie Inception uses the fascinating
power of dreams to encourage a feeling of self-realization and dramatic emotion
exhibited by transcendentalists and romantics.
