Damon Salvatore or Knight in Shining Armor?

The Vampire Diaries is my favorite show off all time.  The character Damon Salvatore is a prime example of the darkness transcendentalists portray in pop culture.  He has this charm about him, almost alluring, that grabs the attention and hearts of girls across the world.  Although some may ask, what about a character full of darkness, draws in so many people?  Damon is a vampire that just has this thing about him –something I can’t even pinpoint –that makes you – and the main character Elena – wanting more.  He continually screws up resulting in the deaths and his friends and the people around him.  Just when you think Damon has finally abandoned his old ways, he lashes out.  He takes risks that normal people would not dare to even think of.  I think that people watch dark characters in hope to feel the intensity that they feel – without taking risks themselves.  Yet there is one person he can’t be selfish about…Elena.  He does whatever it takes to save her life, even if that includes hurting others.  Maybe that’s what makes him so charming – the fact that he would do ANYTHING for the one he loves.  His sacrifices for Elena draw me to root for him despite his actions.  I think that’s what make people strive for the villain…or darkness.  People watch them searching for a mysterious hidden quality expected to explain the villain’s rash decisions. People hope that the character will find the strength to overcome their difficulties and take the high road. And Damon is no different.  In a way I feel like we are all Damon.  We relate to him and other villains believing we – whether we want to admit it or not – are no different than them.  We see that they get a happy ending and are inspired to find ours as well, leading us to work to be better individuals.  In a way a villain serves as the ultimate hero...our very own knight in shining armor.
